The finals of the Shuttle Time Dubai Badminton Club Championships took place at the end of August, with the winning teams awarded season passes for the upcoming BWF World Superseries Finals in Dubai
The second edition of the Shuttle Time Dubai Badminton Club Championships concluded at Dubai Sports World during the last weekend of August, as Prime Star clinched the Group A title and Team Victor B triumphed in Group B.
Established by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as a grassroots scheme to encourage children and young people to pick up the sport, Shuttle Time is now active in over 80 countries worldwide.
The Dubai programme began in July 2014 to strengthen the legacy of the BWF World Superseries Finals, which have been held annually in the city since that year.
And as this year’s series in December draws ever closer, Prime Star and Team Victor B both earned season passes to the tournament with their winning performances.
Prime Star upset the odds to trounce pre-final favourites Team Yonex 5-0 in Group A, while Team Victor B secured a stirring 3-2 comeback victory over NSNL SD-B in Group, having been down 2-0 at one point.
More than 160 players from 15 teams competed in the Shuttle Time Dubai Championships throughout August. Tournament Director Jaffer Ebrahim sees this as a sign that the sport is gaining popularity in Dubai.
“This is the second edition of the tournament and we are pleased that it’s again been very successful and popular with the players,” he said.
“There’s been a lot of excitement for the five weeks throughout the summer, and the standard of play is definitely benefiting from the improvement in coaching, with so many of the club coaches attending the BWF coaching courses organised by Shuttle Time Dubai over the past year.”
While Prime Star and Team Victor B can look forward to watching the professionals at work in December, there will doubtless be rival teams who are already plotting their own paths to glory when the Shuttle Time Dubai Badminton Club Championships return next year.
