With a million reasons to play their best, the BWF Destination Dubai Superseries Finals are sure to be the hottest ticket in town
Badminton has a rich, deep history spanning over 130 years, but Falcon and Associates hope to open up a new exciting chapter when they – in partnership with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) – bring the BWF Destination Dubai Superseries Finals to Dubai for the first time this December.
In less than 100 days, the aquatic tranquility of the Hamdan Sport Complex will be transformed into an arena of high-octane energy, of smashes, serves and lobs as the world’s best badminton players battle it out for a $1 million prize fund.
We know that our elite players are the best advert for our sport and the standard and skill level of players that will be in Dubai at the end of the year will be second to none
The finals are the culmination of a year of 12 qualifying tournaments around the world. Only the best eight players in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories will earn a place, and that is really only a drumroll to the main event.
“When you buy a ticket to the BWF Destination Dubai World Superseries Finals, you are going to see world’s best in action,” said BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund, speaking at a special launch event in Dubai.
His is a sentiment echoed by former World No.1 – now retired – Peter Gade. A player who intimately knows the devotion required to compete at the top level.
“All the top-ranked players on the planet are plotting a course for Dubai,” he said. “They know there are just four stops left on the badminton calendar and anyone who has got any chance of making the final cut to be here in December will be going all out to qualify.”
Gade told Vision he’d been so impressed by the facilities and reception around the event in the Middle East, that, for the first time, thoughts of getting back on court had crossed his mind.
And therein lies the Superseries Finals’ true purpose.
In bringing this event to the UAE, Falcon and Associates and the BWF not only hope to discover new champions, but also to showcase how exciting a game of badminton can be to a new audience.
This ambition is one shared with the Dubai Sports Council, which signed a four-year partnership, facilitated by Falcon and Associates, with the BWF earlier this year to host the Superseries Finals in Dubai.
Speaking at the launch event, Dr Ahmad Al Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council said: “Badminton is a sport that is open to everyone and there is already an active scene in Dubai. The four-year partnership with the BWF provides us with an exciting opportunity to build on that interest, to promote the sport to new levels and to develop grassroots initiatives such as Shuttle Time Dubai that will help to drive the community engagement and physical activity across the city.”
The Shuttle Time Dubai initiative will seed the sport across 70 schools and 3,000 students from the ages of eight to 16 in the UAE, but those young players will need inspiration – perhaps some heroes to put on their wall. Gade believes that the Superseries Finals will be the first step in cultivating great badminton players of the future.
“We know that our elite players are the best advert for our sport and the standard and skill level of players that will be in Dubai at the end of the year will be second to none.”
Tickets begin at 20Dhs and a five-day season pass costs 75Dhs. The BWF Destination Dubai Superseries World Finals will take place at the Hamdan Sports Complex, Dubai, from December 17-21. For further information or to buy tickets, please visit: destinationdubai.ae
