As excitement mounts ahead of Friday’s Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, hopes are high among the UAE National Olympic Committee that they can add to the country’s solitary Olympic gold medal. A 13-strong team of athletes will represent the UAE in six different sports, with Yousif Mirza first out of the blocks in Saturday’s road cycling race.

Among the stars to look out for are UAE judokas Victor Scvortov, Sergiu Toma and Ivan Remarenco, all of whom have won medals at world championship level, and shooters His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Khaled Al Kaabi and Saif bin Futtais, who will be aiming to emulate the success of Athens 2004 gold medallist, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Hasher Al Maktoum.
