World Expo: From vision to victory

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai World Expo 2020 bid, reflects on the two-year journey that culminated in November when the UAE learned it had won the honour of hosting this global mega-event

On the historic achievement and honour of hosting World Expo 2020 in Dubai, we congratulate His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

It has been an incredible journey. The momentum and anticipation built up over the past two years has been astonishing and the cohesive national effort has been a source of pride for the United Arab Emirates. Such support was vital to the success of our campaign and was a key differentiator of our bid. It has been recognised by nations across the world as they became convinced of our ability to deliver an exceptional Expo, one that will bring exciting opportunities for all of those who are involved.

Right from the start our bid vision was about more than just Dubai and the UAE. Under the theme Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, it was about creating opportunity for the wider region and developing a truly global platform to find the innovative solutions required to address the future of Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity – issues that hold resonance for the entire global community.

Our bid was strengthened by the fact that the UAE not only has the logistics and infrastructure necessary to deliver a memorable event with a lasting legacy, but also by the significance of the timing. In 2021 the nation will celebrate its Golden Jubilee, and hosting the World Expo 2020 provides the perfect opportunity for us to welcome the world and look ahead to the next 50 years of development.

The first stretch of our journey is behind us. Now, as we turn towards 2020, the next and most important leg is just beginning.
